Dentures, are most commonly used these, days, however If you have lost teeth due to an injury or a trauma, either disease or decay, then there is an option which can be used, known as partial dentures, that can replace one or two missing teeth and full dentures to replace the entire arch.

After dentures are placed it is noted that great care is taken to provide the optimal fit and aesthetic appearance which is possible, but as time passes even the best fitting denture can become loose and ill-fitting.

If teeth are lost, and the bone in the gum tissue starts to deteriorate allowing the gum tissue to shrink, then this will alter how a denture fits and feels. This is the reason to reline the denture and this is done by a professional, known as a prosthodontist,

As there are changes in body weight, either in loss or gain, it can make the denture fit differently. There could be mouth sores which may develop due to ill-fitting dentures, and so any change in the denture should be noticed and done by the dentist. If there are persistent sores, a medication can be used to help heal stubborn areas of concern. Also the denture is subjected to a lot of wear and tear throughout the day, however the teeth in the denture are strong, but the material used which fits closely to the gums & mouth tissue is made for optimal comfort & need to be replaced.

It is most uncommon that a denture would require relining, every 3-5 years. By relining the denture, the life of a denture can be extended indefinitely. Most patients may not even realise that the denture was relined, nevertheless regular visits to the dentist can determine when its time to reline the dentures

Is it ok to sleep with my dentures?
It is up to you: It is better if you leave them out at night to allow the gums to recover , as many patients do not like to be seen by their partner without the dentures.

If you wear your dentures , you are putting the gums under pressure for an additional 8hrs , whilst sleeping for no real reason, as while you sleep you do not require them to eat, and you are not in public, or talking, so why !!! do give your gums a rest.

There is a famous analogy, ” When you sleep at night do you wear your shoes? So why sleep wearing your dentures?’ What this means is, it is not necessary to wear your dentures if you are not used to it,so why wear them?

Can I eat normally with dentures?
Yes!!! you should be able to eat as you would eat normally, and there is no specific diet. At first start to eat soft, and easily manageable food. Chew properly and gently. Don’t get into the habit of only using only one side of your mouth to eat. You can distribute the pressure by eating more evenly this way and it helps one to learn to eat more easily

If you are eating hard foods, develop a habit of pushing back a little, especially when you are eating, pushing back as the bite helps produce the leverage needed to keep your dentures in place.
